Facebook and iLike (November 20, 2007)

Hi everyone,

Now that I hear Facebook is taking over the globe I figured I should step up (when it’s on the front page of “Le Monde” it must be a big deal). So I set up pages on Facebook and iLike today. There are some songs (including a free download!) and other things to click. I’ll post more soon, but I’m on the verge of going crazy and I need to take a break from the computer. I’m in Paris, after all. Speaking of which, if any of you happen to be in town Saturday, come to L’Abracadabar! It’s going to be a GREAT show, as I have some peeps from the States coming to cheer and record the show for YouTube (the internet is really out of control).

Anyway, here are those links:

Thanks in advance for iLiking me. iLike you too :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Coming Home (December 4, 2007)

Here’s a little holiday cheer, courtesy of the Dublin Airport. I was especially nervous about flying home because it was storming really badly in NYC – and flying is just terrifying, period. I nearly had a fit when security wouldn’t let me board the plane with the champagne I bought in Paris (even though it was purchased duty-free!). And yet my wire cutters made it through security in my guitar case…. After an hour of chaos, I was able to work it out, so my sister can rest assured that we will be having a very merry Christmas. The whole experience rattled my nerves greatly as, in the process, the lady at Aer Lingus discovered that there were two bags checked under my name and I had only checked one, etc. etc. My imagination is always over-active when flying anyway, and I could imagine myself arriving at customs with a huge sack of cocaine on my hands or something. Haha. All was well, though, and once through security I came across a woman handing out free shots of Jameson and very happily partook. It helped considerably. When I got to the gate I saw that the plane was one of those enormous airbuses. Another cause of panic. Everything is a cause of panic when it involves Laura hurtling through air at 30,000 feet. Over an ocean. However, all that changed when I saw a familar face in line to board – Andrew Bird! Yes, with guitar and violin cases at his feet, he was looking quite panicky himself. After all, he’s the man who brought us, “Fiery Crash.” I said hello and then quickly scampered off as he is far cuter in person and the cause of my nerves quickly shifted to more one of more immediacy. Actually, once I knew I’d be flying with Mr. Bird I eased on the prospect of my fate – I felt like there was no way the plane would be going down with him on it. And, alas, it didn’t. Because the plane took off at 4PM the sunset lasted a few hours, which was really cool! I also got to see the moon rise out of the ocean:

Now home, I have a tremendous amount to look forward to in the immediate future – a new album, new shows, a new year! Yes, I am very busy working on Paris-inspired love songs to be released in honor of Valentine’s Day! Also, I am getting ready for my US tour, which kicks off in early January. I’ve added some new dates (and will continue to do so), which you can check out here:

Stuff to Do/Think/Read/Hear (November 17, 2007)

Here’s a bit of a smorgasbord for your Saturday and Sunday:

First, a really cool website called Free Rice. It contains a vocabulary quiz, and for every word you get correct they donate 10 grains of rice through United Nations. Only 10 grains, you might ask? Well, it quickly adds up. In a few minutes last night I racked up 1,000 grains, and yesterday’s total came to 201,226,610 grains of rice! The bonus is that you get to practice/learn words we typically don’t use in our “omg, lol” world. As words and rice are two of my favorite things, I have inevitably become obsessed. There are 50 levels, but I have yet to make it beyond 40. Very addictive. Might want to save this one for when you’re back in the office Monday. (Click the link on the left or go to http://freerice.com).

Another website I visited is Native Energy (also left or go to http://www.nativeenergy.com). For well-under the price of a tank of gas I was able to offset the environmental impact of my tour – the driving, the flights, the trains. My upcoming winter tour, as well as all future tours will also be similarly offset by my pledge to help finance renewable energy projects. The site makes it very easy to calculate your impact and it’s a very small price to pay to help save the planet. Please check it out.

Doesn’t it feel good to do good? Still want to help? (It is Thanksgiving week, after all). My dear friend Elizabeth Mullin is running in the Philadelphia Marathon tomorrow to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in memory of her two sisters. If you would like to support her please visit her blog (http://raceagainstcf.blogspot.com). And go cheer!

Lastly, I am going to be on Live 365’s Radio Crystal Blue tomorrow night, between 7PM-1AM Eastern. Here’s info on how to tune in:

LIVE 365: To hear the live show, fans need to go to www.radiocrystalblue.com and find the mic graphic that links to the Live365 station. This will lead you to the official station at http://www.live365.com/stations/142950
Click the yellow ‘mic’ button on the station page. If the button is greyed out, it will NOT play. However if it’s lit up and clickable, it will open the listening window. Kindly ignore the ‘this station is not available” statement on this page. Next show is Sunday 11/18 from 7PM till 1AM or so ET. In the listening window, adjust for your connection speed and audio program.
Turn off any pop-up blockers you may have; that step is essential for listening live.

That’s all for now. Have a wonderful weekend! It’s been sunny and gorgeous every day this week in Paris, and today’s no exception. Going to go building-gaze (no clouds).

Paris: Pictures (November 12, 2007)

Hello! It’s been a while since I’ve checked in. I have been very busy writing (and booking winter shows!), but I have had a few more opportunities to play tourist. My descriptions are brief, but I think the pictures speak for themselves…

I have been to the Louvre four times since I’ve been here! (Early morning and late night are best). Here are a lot of pictures of the museum itself, which is stunning (especially the ceilings!):

The sun drew me out of my hibernation to admire the end of foliage at Promenade Plantée Parc, a walkway on an old viaduct that overlooks shops and apartments:

I told a friend that the meringues are the size of nerf footballs, and I took this picture as proof. I have since discovered meringues the size of real footballs! No joke! (I didn’t take a picture as they were inside a shop, so you’ll just have to take my word for it).

Paris is really, really windy!

I finally visited the Catacombs, which I have been looking forward to for months. It is a remarkable! A masterpiece of 500 meters of meticulously arranged bones. It is very damp, as you can see in the green fuzz on the low ceiling (it was actually “raining” from the ceiling at points… and the ceiling is 84 steps below ground). Out of respect for the deceased I didn’t want to take pictures of specific individuals (and also because I didn’t want to take anyone “home” with me, if you know what I mean), but here are some unfocused pictures to give you an idea of what it’s like:

Seine at sunset:

A friend from London stopped by for a few days, so while playing tour guide I revisited some spots. Here’s the Eiffel Tower:

Notre Dame is much prettier (and emptier) on a sunny afternoon:

Here are the beginning of winter tourdates – the response has been incredible and I thank all of you for your support! I will be announcing dates in Cleveland, Denver, and Austin soon. If you haven’t already, please let me know if you want me to come to your town!
